Musical Composition Dissertation Combines Ancient Melodies, Modern Poetry
University of Northern Colorado doctoral student Kay Cypret’s dissertation makes a compelling statement on war while highlighting female narratives from World War I. Cypret began her UNC studies at the start of the pandemic and graduated this past summer from the Music D.A. — Music Composition program. Her dissertation, “A Great War Requiem,” is a seven-movement musical composition that pays homage to the dead. She incorporated diverse materials into the work, from ancient requiem mass texts and melodies to more modern poems.
Jenna Altomare, a doctoral student in the University of Northern Colorado's Social Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity program, is incorporating a social justice lens into her degree. She arrived at UNC determined to provide support for the LGBTQ+ community and has since broadened her scope to a variety of marginalized groups.
Doctoral Candidate Tackles Social Issues Using Data Science
Felix Junior Appiah Kubi is a doctoral candidate at the University of Northern Colorado, where he has two semesters left. Growing up in Ghana, he was fascinated with mathematics and computing — a passion that led him to statistics and data science. Today, as a doctoral candidate in UNC's Applied Statistics and Research Methods program, he's applying advanced statistical methods to address complex societal problems.
In his second semester in the University of Northern Colorado's Chemical Education Ph.D. program, Navid Ahmed Sadman has already discovered his passion. He's researching the effectiveness of educating future chemists differently using a "systems thinking" approach. Systems thinking is both a philosophical and practical method that views problems holistically and considers the interconnectedness of a system's components.
